A Bird Bath in your Garden

Of all the ornamentation that you can put in your garden, a bird path is the one that will give you the most entertainment.  It doesn't matter what size your garden is, you are sure to find one that's just right for it.

Because bird baths come in all shapes and sizes you can also get one that fits in with the overall theme of your garden.  If you have a more formal looking garden with stone fountains and wrought iron gates, then you should be able to find a stone pedestal type of bird bath that will co-ordinate beautifully with the fountains - trail the same kind of trailing or climbing plants around both of them to create coordinating features.

If you have a more whimsical garden, you can find bird baths that come in all kinds of weird shapes from lily pads to upturned seashells!  The birds don't care, they're just happy to have some water to splash about in, and that's where the entertainment value of a bird bath comes in.  There are few things more relaxing on a stressful day than to look out of the window and see a couple of birds splashing around in the water.

During the winter months, make sure you keep the bird bath ice free.  Each morning chip out the ice and place some water in the bird bath.  The birds may not come and bathe in it, but they will be able to get a drink of water from it.

One thing to note however if you have a cat, or there are cats in your neighborhood.  Bird baths make easy targets of the birds so make sure that you buy a bird bath that your feline friends won't be able to easily access (without the threat of getting wet - which is a big discouragement for them).  It's ok if you keep your cat indoors at times during the day so that the birds can learn to come down and bathe first thing in the morning for example, but if your cat is allowed out any time it wants, then you need to provide a little security for the birds by purchasing a pedestal type bird bath - or alternatively providing a convenient early alarm system for the birds in the shape of a bell around kitty's neck!
